After a meal and an engaging time of fun and physical education, we take 30 minutes out of the day to focus on character development. From 5:00-5:30 our teachers lead a Bible study with the students and discuss the implications for all areas of life.
Every child admitted into our after school program takes a diagnostic assessment to pinpoint their academic strengths and weaknesses down to the sub-skill level. An individualized curriculum is then created for every student to ensure that each child progresses beyond their current academic level to meet or exceed the standards expected for their grade. Students and parents have access to the I-Ready K-12 adaptive diagnostic for reading and mathematics, to use both at the FORGE and at home, and progress is monitored to ensure that students are on track to achieve their end-of-year targets. An hour of each day is dedicated towards homework and tutoring, and children who need additional help are granted individual tutors to meet with them once a week. Students are also introduced to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics once a month through Houston Public Library’s Community Engagement Program. Once a month from September through February kids have the opportunity to build rockets, work on their critical thinking skills, create their own radio station mixing board and so much more.
On Fridays, our students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of elective classes. Some of those classes include: dance, cheer, jiu jitsu, guitar, etc. The focus of these electives is to expose our students to fun new activities, and reinforce the character concepts that we teach throughout the week. Each elective will teach the students discipline and responsibility in a fun and engaging way.
Every month we host a parents night out, giving our after-school parents the opportunity to relax while we take care of their kids. We also host a monthly parents night focused on helping parents develop useful parenting skills and knowledge. We bring in speakers who lead a workshop on relevant issues for young parents, ranging from financial planning to education.
